How to Throw a Cast Net 2.0

Throwing a cast net is a fundamental skill to have for a fisherman, unfortunately many people struggle with this.

I wrote a blog a few years ago on how to perform this skill, you can reference it here, however I think it is especially important now since your local bait and tackle shop may be closed or you may be trying to avoid interacting with people.

Check out the video below where my dad demonstrates his way of throwing a cast net

So in case you missed it:

  • Grab a foot down from the horn
  • Put it in your other hand
  • Split the remaining line and put that in the same hand
  • Split apart where the two lines meet and put the weight on your thumb
  • Open up the net
  • Throw
  • Pancake

**It is important to note that before you load or throw, that you make sure that there are no knots or overlaps in your net. If there are your net won’t open correctly, so get those tangles out!

In my opinion, this is a very simple yet effective method. No putting it in your mouth or spinning, easy to follow instructions. That being said, if you have an easier method, by all means continue to use that or leave your suggestion in the comments section! Everyone has their own cast net throwing method!

What’s in a cast net?

There are tons of companies that make great cast nets. Below are my top five (in no particular order):

  1. It’s interesting to learn that everyone has their own way to cast the net so you don’t really have to worry about doing it perfectly. My brother just moved closer to the river and he wants to try net casting. He needs to figure out the best way to do this so that he is successful and can catch some fish.

    1. Hell yeah. Everyone has their own way of throwing a cast net. As you saw, my Dad never put it in his mouth, but some people swear by that. I’m not saying it’s the best way, just how we do it and it works. Figure out your best way to throw it and make it open up and you can get your own bait and hopefully catch more.

      Good luck!
