Winter Fishing Forecast

Winter fishing can be hot, if done right that is. I am skipping right over the Fall since the Fall in Florida is basically just a continuation of summer, albeit just slightly cooler. Here is my winter fishing guide.

Winter Fishing Baits

Shrimp and crabs are king in the winter, sheepshead, redfish and trout will be crushing these offerings. Cut bait can also work well as well, but with the availability of finfish being a question, standbys of shrimp and crabs take the lead.

Winter Fishing Targets

Redfish, trout and sheepshead are the undisputed inshore kings of winter. They all do very well in cold water and love to eat shrimp and crabs. Look for these characters around docks, deep pockets, oyster bars and warm water outflows. Additionally, snook and tarpon can be targeted in Winter. These typically warm-water fish will retreat to deeper canals and holes in the backcountry to find warmth and security.

Things to Remember

Be mindful of water levels. There will be a lot of skinny water this time of year, and you don’t want to get left high and dry. Also, dress for the occasion. Cooler temperatures mean pants and layers. If you plan on harvesting any fish, be sure to consult and follow all laws and regulations. Check with the FWC to make sure that you are up to speed. Finally, sunscreen and water—just because it’s cold doesn’t mean that you can’t burn or get dehydrated.

In Sum

Cold-water fishing can be great. Just keep these tips in mind, and you can have a great day out on the water, even when the mercury drops!
