It was a brutal winter here in Florida. For the second year in a row, there was snowfall in the northern counties and flurries even as far south as Tampa. Now that Spring is here and with-it warmer days, we have Spring redfish, and it has been on fire.
Spring Redfish Habitat
The reds have mainly been hanging around docks, oyster bars and flats. However, the key for finding them has been finding the mullet. Anywhere there has been good schools of mullet along with good bottom has been holding them.
Baits for Spring Redfish

Everything from flies in baitfish and crustacean patterns have been productive as well as a number of live baits such as shrimp, greenbacks and pinfish. Fish these baits with a small split shot and 1/0 circle hook on the bottom. Many fish have also come to hand via dead baits like cut pinfish, mullet and ladyfish. Fish these exactly like your live baits, just be sure to size your bait to the size fish that you are targeting.
Other Tips
Remember, if you want to keep a red, know the regulations. Check the FWC website here. As summer fast approaches and temperatures rise, be sure to stay hydrated and apply sunscreen. You can learn more about how to be safe and have fun on the water here.
If you are practicing catch and release, handle these fish with care. Minimize air exposure, use circle hooks, wet your hands before handling, don’t let them flop on the deck (use a lipper if needed) and remember to revive fish after the landing and taking the hook out.
A final thing to remember when targeting Spring redfish is that some of their flats comrades may join the party as well – black drum (pictured right), snook, trout and sheepshead are all fun bycatch fish you may hook as well. Be ready!
Get ready, I think this is going to be a stellar year out on the flats. Prepare, do your research and get out there and fish hard! Until next time, tight lines!
